GlaxoSmithKlineGSK

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Australia is one of Australia 's largest pharmaceutical and healthcare companies which is committed to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.

GSK Australia plays a significant role in the global pharmaceutical supply chain - exporting in excess of 70% of production to more than 78 countries. Operating from its four main locations in Australia , GSK employs more than 1500 people. It is Australia 's largest supplier of vaccines and a leading supplier of medicines for asthma, bacterial and viral infections, depression, migraine, gastroenterological disease, epilepsy, smoking cessation and pain relief. More than 16 million Australians rely on at least one of GSK's medicines, vaccines or consumer healthcare products. The company invested more than $44 million in R&D in 2006, making it one of Australia 's top 20 R&D investors.

A supplier of antiviral medicines for pandemic preparedness stockpiling by governments, corporations and organisations globally, in 2006 GSK Australia commissioned two lines to manufacture antiviral medication for global distribution to further assist Governments' in pandemic influenza planning and meet antiviral stockpiling demand.

GSK is also a major supplier of seasonal influenza vaccine around the world, and is currently developing an adjuvanted pre-pandemic vaccine for H5N1 avian influenza. In June 2007, GSK announced its intention to donate 50 million doses of H5N1 adjuvanted pre-pandemic influenza vaccine to the World Health Organization (WHO) in support of its stockpile initiative. The donation will help establish a much needed stockpile of pre-pandemic vaccines that can be distributed to the world's poorest countries at short notice by the WHO. Delivered over a three-year period, it will provide enough doses of vaccine for 25 million people at 2 injections per person.

VirogardVirogard
Virogard Pty Ltd has developed an entirely new antimicrobial personal protective mask aimed at replacing the ‘surgical mask’ in common use and also conventional P2 or N95 particulate respirators. Practical cost-effective protection from airborne bacteria and viruses is becoming a significant issue in a world susceptible to contagious diseases such as SARS and pandemic influenza.

The reusable VIROGARD mask has an ergonomic fit so that is can be worn without discomfort for long periods. It is simple to fit and wear. More importantly the mask has unique features that enhance protection – an oil/water repellent and a permanent antimicrobial coating that is entirely safe for humans but kills bacteria and viruses [including Influenza Type A] on contact.

This Australian development is available now and attracting considerable international interest.
